Akana Jayewardene

cityLAB Fellow

Akana grew up in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and has moved back and forth between California and her hometown; first to pursue a BA in Architecture and Community Design at the University of San Francisco, and most recently to pursue a Masters of Architecture and Urban Design at UCLA. Having had to uproot and placemake multiple times, Akana is fascinated by how immigrants are able to find “Home” in foreign worlds. She is interested in the role that architecture and urban planning play in equipping cities to accommodate the ever increasing influx of immigrants and in facilitating the crucial human need to placemake.
